Recovery for the hours spent at the console.

Static seated console posture, headset use, and sustained typing create neck, shoulder, and wrist tension with little opportunity to step away and reset.

What Nap Hands can do for you

Short chair massage sessions scheduled around shift changes give dispatchers a practical way to release tension without needing extended time away from the console.

Compensation patterns we see

  • Cervical and upper back strain from prolonged headset use and forward-flexed posture at multi-screen dispatch consoles

  • Wrist and forearm strain from sustained rapid typing and mouse use during high-call-volume periods

  • Chronic shoulder and neck tension from sustained hypervigilance and stress during emergency calls

  • Lower back and hip stiffness from long, largely sedentary shifts with limited movement breaks

  • Eye strain and associated tension headaches from extended screen exposure across multiple monitors

Stretches and exercises that help

  • Chin tucks and neck extension: Gently draw chin straight back (not down), hold 5 sec, repeat 10 times, then tilt head back slightly. Counters forward-head posture from console work.

  • Wrist flexor/extensor stretch: Extend arm, gently pull fingers back then down with the opposite hand. Hold 15–20 sec each direction. Relieves typing/mouse-related wrist strain.

  • Seated hip flexor stretch: Sit at the edge of a chair, extend one leg back, gently press hip forward. Hold 20–30 sec each side. Counters prolonged sedentary sitting.

  • Shoulder blade squeeze: Sit tall, squeeze shoulder blades together and hold 5 sec, release. Repeat 10–15 times. Releases tension from hunched console posture.

  • 20-20-20 eye and neck reset: Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds while gently rolling shoulders. Reduces eye strain and cumulative neck tension.
